Privacy Policy for Navia

Last updated: August 20, 2026

Navia ("the app") is developed by Mohammad Amiri Moalla ("we", "us"). Navia is a navigation app designed for blind and low-vision users. This page explains what data the app accesses, why, and what we do — and don't do — with it.

The short version

Location data

Navia uses your device's precise (GPS) and approximate location to: show you nearby streets and places, announce their distance and direction as you explore, guide you toward a place you've "aimed" at, and determine which offline map area to download. Location runs as an ongoing (foreground) service while the app is actively being used for navigation, which is what lets Navia keep announcing your surroundings as you walk, including with the screen off.

Your location is processed entirely on your device to power these features. It is not transmitted to us, not stored on any server we operate, and not shared with advertisers or data brokers. Downloading a map area sends only the coordinates of the area you're requesting to our map-download servers — the same way any map app fetches map tiles — not your ongoing movements.

Microphone / voice input

Where you choose to use the microphone button to dictate a search, a point name, or a filter keyword instead of typing, Navia hands that audio to your device's own speech-recognition service (typically your Android device's built-in Google speech-to-text) to convert it to text. Navia itself does not record, store, or transmit your voice. How that underlying speech-recognition service itself handles audio is governed by its own provider's privacy policy (typically Google's), not by us.

Crash reports

Navia uses Firebase Crashlytics (a Google service) to learn about crashes so we can fix them. If the app crashes, an automatic report is sent on your next launch, containing: the crash's stack trace (which line of code failed), your device model and Android version, and the app's version number. This report is not linked to your name, email, or any account, because Navia has none. We use it solely to diagnose and fix bugs. Google's handling of this data is governed by Google's own privacy policy.

What we don't collect

Data stored on your device

Downloaded map data, any points you add manually, favorites, and app settings are stored in a local database on your device. If you use Android's own backup feature, a small file containing just your manually-added points, renames, and favorites (not the full map) may be included in your device backup so it can be restored after a reinstall — this is handled entirely by Android's standard backup system tied to your own Google account, not by us.

Permissions Navia requests, and why

PermissionWhy Navia asks for it
Location (fine & coarse)Core navigation features: your position on the map, distance/direction announcements, offline-area downloads.
MicrophoneOnly when you tap a microphone button, to dictate text instead of typing.
NotificationsTo show the ongoing "navigation active" notification required for background location, and map-download progress.
InternetTo download map areas you request, and to send crash reports (see above).
VibrationOptional haptic feedback for certain announcements, if enabled in Settings.

Children's privacy

Navia is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
